We are the Venture Capital arm of The Macdoch Group: www.macdochgroup.com
Our combined experience is in building and investing in businesses from start up to multi-billion dollar enterprises.
Alasdair founded Macdoch Ventures in 2010 after a 20 year career with NewsCorporation. While with News he witnessed first hand the effect of digital disruption on established business models and got to play offense (as Board Director of REA, the owner of Australia's leading real estate website) and defense (as CEO of various newspaper businesses in Australia and the UK). He also lead the development of various digital businesses for News interactive in the UK during the "first Tech Boom" of the late nineties where he made many mistakes.
Alasdair believes that the important ingredients for a successful start-up are people, people and people (and a bit of money and some luck). Fortunately, there are lots of smart people starting new businesses in Australia at the moment and the ambition of Macdoch Ventures is to help as many of them as possible.
In his spare time, Alasdair is developing a premium, grass-fed beef product on his property in the New England Tablelands.
Mike is an active early-stage investor and business builder, and is often the first point of contact at Macdoch Ventures. He specialises in partnering with talented entrepreneurial teams who demonstrate high levels of commitment and integrity, and recognise the benefits of combining with an experienced business partner.
Mike has built and invested in a number of digital companies in both Australia and the US. In the US Mike co-founded Newcap Communications, an online trade publishing company while also getting his MBA from Wharton. He achieved a successful exit from Newcap returning to Australia to take up leadership positions at Fairfax and then News Corporation. During that time Mike led more than 120 web businesses through expansion and growth. In addition, he has personally invested in more than 20 early-stage Australian startups.
Specialties: Early stage investing, business building, high growth companies, digital businesses, media, board and advisory. In his spare time Mike is helping build a tension-music library for the film and television markets. Given a chance he will bore you with talk of early morning swimming.
Eric joined the Macdoch Ventures team in late 2013, reconnecting with Alasdair and Mike, ex-colleagues from News Ltd.
Following a 20-year career in a series of Finance Director roles, and as founder-CEO of a UK media start-up which he took to IPO, Eric launched CFO Plus, a provider of outsourced finance management to small and medium companies. The timing was fortuitous, as Macdoch Ventures was also taking shape. Since then Eric has become increasingly involved in managing the activities of Macdoch Ventures and related entities and is now fully absorbed by this work.
Eric's contribution to Macdoch's mission of enabling smart entrepreneurs to build successful businesses draws on his conviction, born out of experience, that transparent information flow and strong financial control are key ingredients in supporting growth and also in managing through difficult times. By applying these principles to the assessment and on-going relationship with portfolio companies he aims to add value to both sides of the partnership.
